RFMD® Introduces Breakthrough Self Shielding Technology at RFMD's Self Shielding Process Enhances RF Performance and Greatly Simplifies Integration of Complex RF Components GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA - February 13, 2007 - RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance radio systems and solutions for applications that drive mobile communications, today announced the introduction of a breakthrough new self shielding technology for RF circuits. RFMD's self shielding technology is designed to eliminate the need for custom external shields by integrating RF shielding into the RFIC or module. This reduces the volume required for RF sections by approximately 30% to 50% and provides customers with RF components that are not sensitive to board placement. RF shielding is a key determinant of the cost, size and ease of implementation of the RF section in a mobile device. Circuits that transmit or receive RF signals are shielded to prevent leakage of energy into unwanted areas of the host device. Traditionally this has been done with an external metal "can" that encapsulates and shields the RF section of a circuit board. Because the cans used for RF shielding must be customized for each individual circuit board, the implementation of external RF shielding is costly and time consuming. Additionally, external RF shields increase space requirements for the RF section and can adversely affect the performance of RF circuitry, thereby requiring that shielded circuits be retuned to counter the effects of the external shield. By removing the sensitivity to board placement and eliminating the risk of circuit retuning, RFMD's self shielding technology accelerates time-to-market and reduces the costs of RF implementation in mobile devices. RFMD's self shielding technology is applicable to any RFMD product and will be available first in RFMD's POLARIS™ 3 Total Radio™ solution. Victor Steel, vice president of research and development of RFMD, said, "RFMD's innovative approach to radio frequency shielding gives our customers the opportunity to place RF circuits as they would any other component of the phone layout. Customers using products with RFMD's self shielding technology enjoy the benefits of improved RF performance, lower total cost, reduced board space requirements and overall ease of RF implementation. All of these are critical factors in handset design, from low-tier handsets to feature-rich 3G multimode devices." |
